Concert Season

I hadn't been to a concert for a decade or so, until May that is. Julie and I went to see Carrie Underwood (see the post in May about that). Then we found out that Fergie was coming to the Paso Fair and Hannah thought that would be fun to go. So we bought tickets. The concert was Thursday, so we went up to the Fair, spent the day (it was HOT) and the kids rode some rides. Then we went to the concert. The opening band was HORRIBLE! Just HORRIBLE! Then Fergie came out and sang for about 40 minutes (minus the brief times to change clothes) and came out for an encore. Tim was SO MAD! He was upset that a concert would only be about 40 minutes long. I told him that Carrie Underwood probably only sang for about 15 minutes longer than this at her concert. He couldn't believe it. After the concert, the kids rode some more, we had funnel cake and came home. We got home about 1 am.

Friday, Tim and I had tickets to see James Tayor at the Santa Barbara Bowl. So Tim's mom came to stay with the kids and we got a hotel in Santa Barbara. We met Craig and Sue for dinner and then they went to the concert with us. The night was BEAUTIFUL! The Santa Barbara bowl is a unique venue. We could see the ocean from our seats. JT came out and did 2 forty minute sets AND a 3 song encore. So, Tim was happy that someone still knows how to put on a good show! I think that I have spent my Concert allotment for the next decade, but it was fun!

Nettie! Dad and I don't have the FAINTEST clue who "Fergie" is (the only Fergie we are acquainted with is the former Duchess...it's not her, right?) so your travails attending her concert sounded rather hot -and sweaty -and SHORT. But JT, now....there's a different story! We are both envious that you got to go and hear/see him...we play the CD of his that you gave us for Christmas every time we're in the SUV for more than 20 minutes...love it! So I hope that you enjoyed the concert for US, too.....did he bring along the percussion machine that is in the DVD? It would have been worth it to have DJ there to see and hear it...did we tell you that Pappa Franzwa got him a set of drums for Christmas, and for his birthday, last week, gifted him with cymbals? Boy....it's going to be interesting, being the neighbor of that kid...he LOVES to drum. That machine would have been really enjoyable for him to study!

OOoh - I am GREEN with envy over the wonderful JT concert and venue! That sounds like a great night!

Mom - Fergie is a singer who formerly belonged to a popular musical group called the Black Eyed Peas. She's "tres trendy" for young ladies who want to look and dress like her. (She's very cute and not, well, shall we say inaproppriate - usually - in the way she dresses).

Tim - I started noticing the 40-45 minute concert trend a few years ago when I paid good money to see Ray Charles at the casino in Lincoln City.

After 40 minutes, the music stopped and they escorted him off stage - for what I ASSUMED was an intermission! But noooo. We kept waiting and waiting and waiting, but they never came back. I was REALLY ticked!

Luckily, there are still great acts that give you your money's worth - like JT. But the trend these days is for one shorter set. And I agree - total RIP OFF!

I've been trying to go to one of the many local outdoor free concerts going just about any night of the week in the Salem area. Friday night, some friends and I went to Riverfront Park to see a free showing of the Beatle's "Hard Days Night." What fun! They have these GIANT inflatable screens now that makes if feel like you're at the drive in!

As they waited for it to get dark enough, they showed an original Betty Boop cartoon from the 30s and a group of old drive-in advertisements.

Well, that's my life for now! - Nat
